About the Project

In a departure from the prevailing trend of running cabinetry all the way to the ceiling, this kitchen resists convention with shorter wall units, adjacent to only the oven tower and refrigerator extending upwards. This low profile, along with the “negative space” between cabinets and soffit, imparts spaciousness and a more human scale. Horizontal bi-fold doors that open up, not out, reinforce the linear appearance. To augment the light from an adjacent wall of East River-facing windows, a bright white high-gloss lacquer was chosen for the slab door.

Apart from two small sections of floating shelves for decorative objects, the concept was to avoid distraction from the serene environment. Upper cabinets, with touch latches, are void of hardware; base cabinets use integrated channel pulls. Stainless steel toekicks create a floating effect.  Major appliances perform a disappearing act with either paneled fronts or the unique white glass faces of the Miele White collection. For entertaining ease, the ice maker and wine refrigerator are located near the open-plan living area, differentiated from the kitchen by stainless steel fronts.   Densely-veined quartzite countertops with waterfall end and matching backsplash provide subtle texture. Neutral-toned porcelain tile flooring breaks from the white-on-white palette without disrupting the soothing ambiance.

This project was done in collaboration with Timeline Renovations.
