About the Project
Where 1900 Meets 2023: A Thoughtful Revival in Historic Brooklyn
Nestled in a storied Brooklyn brownstone and overlooking a private backyard oasis, this kitchen is a masterful blend of heritage and modernity. At its foundation, a black-and-white ¾” mosaic tile floor—laid in an intricate border pattern—pays homage to the home’s turn-of-the-century origins. Echoes of the past continue in the custom kitchen with white-painted, traditional inset cabinetry, defined by a graceful ogee inner profile and punctuated by polished nickel hardware and hinges.
Soaring ceilings are fully utilized with double-stacked wall cabinets, each thoughtfully detailed with triple panels and a shallow display cabinet above the range hood for added visual intrigue. A rolling walnut library ladder—both functional and sculptural—grants access to the uppermost storage, gliding along sleek nickel rails.
Timeless Kitchen Design: Classic Marble, Modern Island, and Walnut Accents
Perennially classic marble countertops and white subway tile backsplash reinforce the period-correct sensibility. At the same time, contemporary twist arrives in the form of a stainless-steel waterfall island with an integrated stainless-steel sink—bold, clean-lined, and unmistakably modern. The homeowners, parents and kids alike are all between 5’10” and 6′ so the island is higher than a typical height.
Further contrast is struck with matte black dome pendant lighting, black-trimmed contemporary windows, and clear acrylic island stools. To warm the predominantly white palette, walnut accents appear again—inside the mullion glass cabinets and in open tray bases flanking the microwave drawer—creating depth, richness, and a sense of balance.
This luxury kitchen isn’t just a renovation—it’s a conversation between centuries, brought to life with care, craftsmanship, and an eye toward timeless design.
